Senator Thur man in his letter to the committee of In vitation at tbe Democratic banquet of .OiumDus, umo, this evening, expresses his regret that the severe weather prevents his attendance, and offers some reflections upon the toast of the "jacksonian Demo cracy" on which the Senator had been ap pointed to speak. He writes: I "I wish to recall attention to some of the most marked characteristics of the Democracy of the time of Andrew JacksonJ I refer to the time when he was. a candidate for the .Presidency, and when he filled tae Presidential chair. I First, The Democracy were then emi nently, if not pre-eminently, distinguished ov tneir devotion to the union of the States, South and North. East and West. TThat sentiment was cherished by every true Democrat. Subsequent events chill. ed, and at length for a time ' suspended it in the South, but the happiest circum stance of our present condition! i tha iks to the influence of Democratic princip.es, is that the love of Union is evervwh'ire restored, and that its preservation s a fl sed principle of the ., Democratic party in the South. Secondly. The Dart v was eauallv dis tinguished by its love of the Conitimtion. It sought to preserve it in all its vigor and oenencence by eivins to it a national and rational interpretation, and it battled man fully and constantly against those latitu de narian constructions that threatened to convert the Government into an an limited centralized" despotism, and on .the other band against all the vices that menaced (he existence of the Union; and permit me to say that the principles of the Jaeksonian uemocracy in tins respect are as lmpor- tant to-day as they ever:were at riod of our history. any pe- Thirdly, 1 he Ja cksonian Democracy were the determined foe of monopoly. They could not be otherwise, for the very j foundation of the party was the doctrine ! of equal rights. By whatever names they may - have been - called, there have been4 and perhaps ever will be but two great parties in America, the Dem ocratic J Darty asking nothing but , equal rights, and thejbppostngjparty, whose lead ers have ever sought, and ever will seek, the special privileges created by law. Who can forget the great battle fought by the Democracy Under ,the lead of Jackson against the Bank of the tJnited States, md who can fail to see that & desperate strug gle against a far more powerful combina tion of capital and privilege than was pre sented by that institution, is now impend ing? Will the Democracy of to-idy fol low the example set by their fathers, of inflexible opposition to special privilege, or will they prove recreant to ; their princi ples, the history and traditions iof their party ? I his is a question that imust ere long be answered. My own belief lis that it will be answered as it ought to bej and the Democrats of to-day will prove themselves to be what their fathers were, true men. They will' be earnest but not rash, deter mined but not unreasonable, destructive of wrongs and abuses alone, and conservative of all that should exist in a free republic. Fourthly. The JacksQhian Democracy were a party ioi economy ; tnei ordinary annual expenses of Jackson's administra tion, (that is expenses of the uo'jrernment exclusive of payments in discharge of the public debt were but 9 15,00)1), 000 or thereabouts. Now our ordinary annual expenses are nearly ten times tnat sum. What a contrast ! While our population has increased but little more than tnree- f old, our expenses have increased nearly ten fold. Is it not higb tiine that, we should return to the , economical principles and practices of Jacksonian Democracy,? These points, few in number, but transcendent in importance, J have thought it jproper to note for the consideration of our friends." Others might be stated but these must suffice for to-day. f Gentlemen, I know that the banquet will be enjoyed by those w who attend it. I trust that it will prove ' beneficial to others as well. 1 trust its , influence Will be felt in reviving Jacksonian Democracy and in combining the opponents of the! Republi can party m a grand effort tq- free the country from misrule and corruption. Foreign. ; London, January 8.
